Low mechanical properties. Because graphite has a special simple hexagonal lattice, carbon atoms layered, the same layer on the covalent bonding, atoms small atomic spacing, binding is very strong, and between layer and layer, surface spacing, weak binding, so the strength of graphite, plasticity, toughness is very low, almost zero, hardness is only 3 HBW. Therefore, the graphite in cast iron is equivalent to the formation of many "micro cracks" or "micro holes" on the steel matrix, which not only reduces the bearing area of the steel matrix, but also because of the stress concentration caused by the sheet graphite, the tensile strength, plasticity and toughness of gray iron are much lower than that of steel iron. However, when the cast iron bears the compressive stress, the adverse effect of graphite is small, so it has a high compressive strength, suitable for the manufacture of parts under the compressive stress.
