Characteristics and applications of gray cast iron parts
I. Characteristics
1. Mechanical properties
Low tensile strength: the matrix cleavage effect caused by flake graphite is obvious, and the tensile strength is significantly lower than that of steel, but the compressive strength can reach 3-4 times of the tensile strength.
Excellent wear resistance: pearlitic matrix gray cast iron (such as HT200-HT250) has high hardness and wear resistance due to the fine distribution of graphite.
2. Functional characteristics
Outstanding shock absorption: graphite sheet can absorb vibration energy, the shock absorption capacity is about 10 times that of steel, suitable for machine tool base, frame and so on.
Excellent casting performance: carbon equivalent is close to the eutectic composition, good fluidity, low shrinkage, suitable for casting thin wall or complex shape parts (such as pipes, boxes).
Good machinability: graphite lubrication reduces tool wear and easy chip breaking.
3. Organizational diversity
Flexible matrix type: divided into ferrite (HT100), ferrite-pearlite (HT150), pearlite (HT200-HT250) and born cast iron (HT300-HT350) according to the matrix structure, to meet different strength requirements.
Graphite morphology is fixed: the structure of flake graphite is stable, but the tip is prone to stress concentration, which limits its plasticity and toughness.
