However, the first-generation semiconductor materials based on silicon have already approached the theoretical limits determined by their properties.


The third-generation semiconductor materials possess a wider bandgap, higher breakdown electric field, thermal conductivity, electron saturation, and higher radiation resistance. They are suitable for manufacturing high-temperature, high-frequency, radiation-resistant and high-power devices. They are expected to replace the first-generation semiconductor material silicon to meet higher requirements in the future and will be more widely applied in industry.


Silicon carbide ceramic materials are the most mature third-generation semiconductor materials and one of the most promising application fields. Their various indicators are superior to those of silicon, and the bandwidth is nearly three times that of silicon. Moreover, the theoretical operating temperature of silicon carbide devices is 600°C, which is much higher than that of silicon devices.
