The process flow of investment casting
1: Casting design
First, the design of the casting must be carried out. This involves designing and validating the model based on the casting requirements and practical needs. The validation primarily assesses whether the casting meets the specified standards, while the model design should be as simple and precise as possible. Additionally, during the modeling process, it is essential to consider the actual manufacturing and usage conditions to ensure that the casting's shape meets the necessary technical requirements.
2: Make a casting mold
After the casting design is completed, a mold must be created. Various methods can be used to create the mold, such as hand carving and 3D printing. Hand carving, a traditional method, is less efficient. In contrast, 3D printing can create the mold more quickly and accurately, streamlining the production process.
3: Molding
Coating is to apply a layer of special material on the surface of the casting mold, in order to avoid overheating and burn the surface of the casting mold during casting. Common coating materials include ink, graphite, etc.
4: Baking
After the mold is applied, it needs to be baked. This process is to allow the coating on the surface of the mold to dry and cure fully. It usually takes 6-8 hours at a low temperature (50-70 degrees Celsius).
5: dewaxing
After baking, the mold begins to dewax. In a special dewaxing device, the surface coating of the mold is melted so that all the wax melts and a hollow mold appears.
6: Casting
On the basis of dewaxing, casting can be carried out by pouring molten metal into a specially manufactured gating system. After casting, the metal needs to be cooled and the casting removed.
7: Clean up
After the casting is removed, it needs to be cleaned. Each casting needs to be treated for a certain period of time, including using sandpaper and iron brush to remove particles and burrs and other impurities on the surface of the casting.
8: Burr Treatment The final step is burr treatment. When using automatic or semi-automatic burr removal processes, the casting is placed on a specially designed machine and the burrs are removed by high-speed rotating mechanical shovels. After the treatment, dust and debris are sucked away.
